GCA Summer Heritage Camp

2012 GCA SUMMER HERITAGE CAMPERS ENJOY NATURE

For the fourth year Guyana Cultural Association of New York, Inc. incorporates an extended program for children in its events for the season. As always, this program is open to all children of the community.  It will be housed at Flatlands Reform Church, 3931 Kings Highway, Brooklyn, New York.  It will take place from Monday, July 9 to Thursday, August 16, 2012. The week will consist of four (4) days. The day will last from 9 am to 3 pm. The program will consist of week long intensives under the following subject areas: Music, Dance, Arts and Crafts, Science and Communications.

Specifically each area will include under:  Music:   Folk songs, folk music, ring play, music theory and practice and the history of music in the Caribbean Diaspora

Dance:   Theory of movement, history of dance, dance form and meaning related to the Caribbean Diaspora, instruction and practice of specific movements Diaspora

Arts and Crafts:  Theory of art in general, art forms related to the environment of the Caribbean, found art.

Science:  Science in the art of construction of toys, including kites, cooking and observation of and interaction with the environment, including space

Communication: Understanding communication, voice and diction, action, the written word, publishing (the chap book)

In addition the activities of each week are literacy based with a critical inquiry component. The use of an on-site library is planned.

We will be charging each child 25.00 per week with a sliding scale for families registering more than three (3) children. Further, we intend to offer scholarships to children who are unable to attend because of financial means.

There will be, however, a fee of five dollars ($5.00) for registration of each child.  Each child will provide a medical certificate of physical fitness. Children will bring their own lunches while the association will provide  snacks.
